    nah, to-hit is usually based on strength. Like, in 3rd/3.5 you had to take a feat that let you use dex instead of str to check if you hit. Dex was just for dodging as far as hit calculations go.

    I thought str was damage with a melee weapon, and dex was likelihood to hit

    Thac0 is based entirely on your character class so your ability scores basically matter not a whit when it comes to being able to hit dudes.

    that is the joke of ability scores in pre-3rd edition D&D. only the really extreme ones (like, 3s and 18s, basically) change the game noticeably at all.

    18/00 STR every day. Those extremes were always such weirdly big breaking points too. With weird shit like racial limits that made it even more confusing.

    I never played pre-3rd edition D&D, but I had a couple of Forgotten Realms novels that would include adventures in the back. Second edition, I think, but I'm not sure.

    Which makes me wonder who the fuck plays a D&D adventure tacked onto the end of a novel?

    I remember there was a weird one for STR (?) that was like 18/00 between 18 and 19

    and I think 19 and above was demi-god level of power?

    there was a dwarf in the game who started out with a really high CON and I think you could pump it a bit with items or books or something, and when he hit 19 or 20 he started regenerating hitpoints

    Yep, at 18 STR you would roll percentile to see where you fell between 00 - 99 with 00 being the max. It was all about the fact that 18 was the human maximum so they gave variation in 18 between being just a strong guy and Magnus Von Magnuson.
