3E uses the exact same system, just with the numbers and subtractions the sensible way around.

I honestly doubt any modern gamer knows what THAC0 is. That little bit of nerd-dom resides solely within annals of RPG history.

Armour making you harder to hit makes more sense than it absorbing damage.

Armour deflects and turns aside attacks. Usually something that penetrates your armour is a killing blow anyway. When it successfully protects you, it does so by making your enemy's attack fail to strike properly.

That's a shame, MHR is discontinued.

It's a pretty cool system, but the devs lost the Marvel license so they can't sell it anymore... Maybe they'll release the same system with a non-licensed setting later, you should check it out sometime...

I thought it wasn't chance to hit, it was chance to hit an exposed fleshy part of the body.

The way I always ran it, at least with regards to flavor text, is that you have your dextrous AC (basically your dex bonus plus any deflection / displacement AC bonuses), and then you had your full AC.

If someone missed you based off of the dextrous AC alone, the sword/arrow/whatever just misses you because you got out of the way or they were clumsy.

If they breached that but missed your real AC, the arrow bounced off your armor, or you blocked the sword strike with your shield, or the hammer hit your breastplate and bounced back, causing no damage.

It meant nothing with regards to actual damage done, but it made combat feel a little more real because it let the flavor of the fight seem more cinematic and varied.

We spent a lot of time describing how the combat went down aside from numbers going up and down, and it made it lots of fun.

it's a system that neckbeards still defend that uses a backasswards calculation method in order to determine that you rolled well enough to hit something instead of just, you know, adding a die roll to a single value and comparing it to one other value
