If today's conservatives would get out of the way of conservation and research, overpopulation won't be such a problem a hundred years down the line.

Which it probably won't be anyway. China and India aren't going to keep having a billion people forever, it is the nature of modernizing societies to reduce birthrates.

As soon as I posted that, it occurred to me that there's not much point to a meeting shitting on a roomful of people who think they're exempt from the shitting.

Hell, looking at it you could probably do it by hand with a manual milling machine if you took your time over it.

This may or may not be why my father may or may not be always on the lookout for accurate BAR schematics.

Just a note for him if he finds those schematics. You can make an AR-15 lower without legal issue. But the NFA still applies to homemade weapons, so he's going to need to make it a semi-automatic.

I don't understand why we keep trying to go to mars. It's so goddamned stupid. It would be like, ok, we just built our first canoe. We took it up and down a river for a bit, cool.

OK NOW LET'S CROSS THE PACIFIC

We're just not ready. It's a stupid idea, even if it's theoretically possible. We should just be investing in general aerospace stuff to tool around in orbit, clean up busted satellites, which is an actual problem, maybe head to the moon if we see any need to. Work on some clean power sources that operate well in space (and also maybe run water purification plants / communication infrastructure in remote areas).

It's worse than that, really. When they decided to cross the Pacific all they could do was hope whatever they found on the other side would be similar to where they'd left from. We already know what's on Mars. Nothing worthwhile.

It's like the expeditions to the antarctic around the turn of the century. Hundreds of people died doing something expensive and pointless!

Then 50 years later we flew in with B52s and landed on top of the south pole like bosses. Human race #1.

You think space travel should be private enterprise instead of publicly funded, will?

I would have no problem with that if it were a workable model, but how are they going to make money?

I think I heard NASA is already outsourcing stuff to SpaceX

SpaceX has a mostly-working supply system to the ISS. Beyond that, commercial satellites have been taken care of by private industry for a long time now.

Doing manned stuff is way more expensive (past suborbital stuff like Virgin Galactic anyway) and there isn't any money in it yet. No money in pure science stuff, either.

It is, but it's also their nature to dramatically increase per-capita resource consumption. If the Indians and the Chinese don't have a single baby from here on out, but still continue developing, that alone is going to put existential levels of load on already-stretched global resources.

    Never mind the environmental impact.

I'm not sure that future overpopulation is going to be the big deal people make it out to be.

It seems like whenever people get out of the subsistence standards of living, birth rates drop like a rock. Get rid of the Catholic Church's no birth control, ever attitude, and things should start to stabilize out pretty well.

Of course, our current numbers do a pretty good job fucking the planet all on their own, so that's still a bit of an issue. But we don't need to start exterminating / sterilizing people to save the planet.

Yes, this is a thing that people do now. The law allows it for private use. Selling it runs into a bunch of potential issues.

I'm going to add here that no one is saying homemade guns are new or anything. I only mentioned what the company did to add context for the quote.

you can buy/find online plenty of information to make your own homemade gun

which is of course illegal unless you submit it for ATF inspection

No, not a requirement at all.

It's just interesting that there is hysteria over 3D printed guns when the tech is considerably less mature than and comparably expensive to basic cnc equipment.

I suppose it's because people can envisage 3D printing being a true consumer technology (in the "one in every home" sense)? Or they're just not thinking that hard about it.

Basically I think that if you were a generally bad person looking to make (as opposed to buy, or steal) an untraceable gun for nefarious purposes you'd almost certainly buy or rent a CNC machine and use that with any of the freely available schematics online before you'd even consider 3D printing.

Far be it from me to defend science journalism! It's horrendous. But there is a difference between a treatment discovered and a cure developed. The treatment for grey hair might be lethal, for example, killing everyone who gets it. That's not a functional cure for anything!

Right. The Polish Resistance turned out large quantities of guns during the war without access to large scale manufacturing. The 3-D Printing aspect is just a tech panic. Right now they have managed to make a single shot disposable gun. Which might be useful for Hollywood assassins I guess.
