    I think the rent for that caravan was like fifty quid for a week. It was a deal bought with coupons cut out of a tabloid newspaper. The wife loves a bargain, and our finances were somewhat constrained at the time. It reminded me of holidays we used to take when I was a kid, a big static caravan by a river in what passes for summer here. The same park, every time, in a pleasant village of cottages with grey thatched roofs.

    We fished every day, and over the course of several years I think I read about forty Agatha Christie novels and sundry Sharpe books on a riverbank. There are worse ways to spend a childhood holiday.
