I find it too tepid to be hurtful, especially compared to fag. I recently found out that I have trouble saying the term fag hag aloud, just because of that brief second between the two words when you feel a little like a bigot

is harder to translate. The road away is long/further away than home does the job.
but bort isn't just away
"he's over there" is "han er der borte"
so the first line means both the road away from here is long, and the road to over there is long
which is what fits with the next line - since it's "longer away than home" in a direct translation
and the first translation, while the only one being good english, doesn't really make sense. The meaning of it is the road to somewhere is long, it is longer than the road to home.
