See, I personally feel like the layered-sugary-thing-to-make-cake-surfaces-appear-flat thing is kind of cheating.

I mean, the things they manage to do with them are still insanely impressive and not something I could ever do myself... but still.

Got carried away sniffing wine. Took a slug of it up the nose.

I'm having a bad time. Really bad.

Wait, are you wine tasting? I have a wine tasting tip that may make it more fun.

Well I'm drinking wine. So yes.

Alright, first step stop smelling it.

You'll wear out your olfactory nerve.

Take a small sip (1/8 oz or 3/4 teaspoon, about the size of a sip of hot coffee) and let it sit in your mouth naturally. No swishing or chewing or funny business. It'll kind of settle by the tip of your tongue.

Give it 15-20 seconds. There may be some tingling, but that's fine ignore it.

Then swallow about 1/4 of what's in your mouth.

When you exhale through your nose after swallowing that's when your now magnified sense of smell will work for you.

After 5-6 seconds (or more if you like) swallow the next 1/4.

Repeat till that sip is gone.

Now smell the wine in the glass and take another tiny sip, this time swallowing normally.

It's kind of a process, but it's really really cool how it works.
That's pretty damn effective (although I think you've been sold some bullshit on the idea of wearing out your olfactory nerve)

Although I really enjoy swishing it around and smelling it prior to tasting. That way you get to really pick up the distinction between the smell and the taste.I suppose it works fine this way round, but you're holding wine in your mouth so can't discuss it.

    Olfactory fatigue

    In particular this section:
It is a term commonly used in wine tasting, where one loses the ability to smell and distinguish wine bouquet after sniffing at wine(s) continuously for an extended period of time.

Less of a thing if you're only tasting one wine instead of say ten, but I still find its nice to come at the flavor without bias.

What you think "makes sense" has nothing to do with reality. It just has to do with your life experience. And your life experience may only be a small smidgen of reality. Possibly even a distorted account of reality at that. So what this means is that, beginning in the 20th century as our means of decoding nature became more and more powerful, we started realizing our common sense is no longer a tool to pass judgment on whether or not a scientific theory is correct. - Neil Degrasse Tyson
