I know several people who quit working because their job barely made enough money to cover the cost of daycare.

Oh, shit I didn't even think about daycare.

$10,000/yr is very low if you don't have a parent at home raising the child.

It wouldn't be low if one of the parents was young enough that he or she didn't have a career before the baby. Those people probably bring the average down.

They're also the sort of people that that PSA was probably targeting.

Aarghhhh not even thinking about lost wages or opportunity cost!

When you factor that shit in, babby costs amazing amounts of money.

Your basic entry level poop factory doesn't cost $830 a month, does it?

Are you supposed to sprinkle gold leaf on gerber food?

With daycare, absolutely. You will spend maybe $150/month just on the things he poops in.

One huge cost savings: exclusive breastfeeding for at least 6mo. Try for a year. That will save piles of cash (if the mother is at home).

Babby is expensive, and a lot of those costs are super front-loaded. They get cheap from like 7 - 13, then expensive again until they leave.

Don't buy diapers, just tie newspapers around butt. More cost savings.

yeah I mean daycare for us is cheap, like 800/mo

it can be much more expensive in other parts of the country

and that doesnt count food and diapers and clothes and toys and doctor visits and all the shit you have to buy like cribs and car seats

800/month is wayyyy out of the range of common folk

I just asked the guy next to me with a baby. He pays 1300 a month for his day care. Good lord why do you people do this to yourselves?

I dunno what to say, there are lots of more expensive daycares in austin and when we were glancing in boston, I think the average was 1200

I think most dual income households are in the same bind, where it's pay 10k year or lose XXk year in salary

It's not exactly sensible to go back to work after the child is in school anyhow. Kids need things frequently - having one parent be on call for the kid emergencies while the other one can reliably work is a good model.

If the dumb liberals got rid of stupid child labor laws, not only would you not need daycare but you could use the income to subsidize the other expenses. Still might not cover it, but it'd get a lot easier.
