Hello chat. I had a very successful romp at the farmer's market this morning. I got a strawberry-sweet-cream-vanilla crepe, and later I had Cambodian bahn chev. It's really excited to buy something when you have NO IDEA what it will look like/what's in it when it's done. :D It was yummy.

I do that (buy mystery food/drink) sometimes and it's always awesome!

(Or horrific but worth it for the awesomes)

We need settings with medieval reactive armor.

Two knights, circling each other, each terrified to hit the other guy.

I feel like he wants his world to be gritty and real but then he says stuff that knocks my sense of immersion right out the window for a bit.

i understand what you're saying but you're a niche, right? like, not a lot of people share your knowledge of these things so while that complaint might be relevant for you it is broadly not problematic for a book.

True, it would just be nice to go that extra mile sometimes. Like, here is the most recent example:

Minor book 4 game of thrones spoilers:
There is a bit where Brienne is looking for a new shield. Now, she is a warrior that knows her stuff and Martin wants to portray her ad such. So, he writes some about how she wants to stick with her current heavy shield and not get a lighter one. She briefly compares the pros and cons of different shield types, and one point comparing the "pro" of getting axes and swords stuck in certain types of shields.

But that is not a pro at all. That is a huge, huge con. So like, suddenly I am thinking that Brienne is clueless but wait no Martin probably thinks that is legit so no, in world Brienne knows her stuff so... And suddenly I am right out of the story.

I mean, have your fantasy fun. Like, I don't mind that the arms and armor are a complete cluster fuck of chronology from a historic perspective. But I feel like when you want to write about the nitty gritty of combat that you should do a little homework.

Yeah having weapons sticking out of your shield or armor is a big no no; that's basic armorcraft 101.

Sure it might look cool in your head, but in reality swords and axes sticking out of your shield and armor are heavy, awkward to move and undermine structural integrity.
