I've been given empty countryside and I've correctly identified the american midwest, north german coast, norway, and south of france almost based on shrubbery alone
I think even patriotism is more dangerous than beneficial
You're right. One is more connected to cultural context and not national. It's still horrible though and blinds you to the darker aspects of your own culture.
Only if you blithely overdo it to the point of ignorance
but really what isn't that true of
i didnt have a litter to carry me around unfortunately
so i had to walk through park slope and gramercy like a peasant
I wouldn't say patriotism is "horrible." Overblown -- definitely in the U.S., and definitely by the right -- but not "horrible."
the kitchens are always SO disgusting though
Go quick. It'll probably close soon.

and gordon ramsey was like HEY BUD CHEER UP I PAINTED YOUR RESTAURANT
Because patriotism at its heart is belief in a countries exceptionalism. And by espousing it you are stating your own countries exceptionalism over others.
This is why it gets annoying to everyone else in the room.
And all countries have their own belief in being exceptional. Some tend to be more vocal about it but it also is not unique.
Of course it is only very recently that has been treated as bad form to state such beliefs in public.
I have been on a cyberpunk kick lately and am rereading Bruce Sterling's stuff
there is a line in one of his stories that "following anything to its 'logical conclusion' leads to insanity"
I liked that. it strikes me as true.

it was good
I got to make bad decisions and survive!
By it's very nature it makes you blithe.
While it's unifying component can be useful, the very fact that you are taking pride in the superiority of your culture over others makes you unwilling to make necessary changes as they occur.
hmm yes this seems like a solid metaphor
I don't really agree with this. I think it's completely possible to proud of one's country without engaging in exceptionalism or lessening anyone else
It's the same as any other kind of pride or confidence; overdone it's obnoxious, done at the expense of others it's irritating, done on its own merits and in its own reasonable way it rankles only the insecure
