don't get me wrong I'd never go to olive garden of my own accord, I can cook most of their dishes at least as good for half the price

    chili's though

I like a lot of stuff at chilis and no amount of internet snobbery will cure me of this (also they have several good low carb options)

I use to like Chili's but the place is an anathema to me now. I had 1 bad experience, not really the food either, and now I have 0 interest in ever going back.

I mean I like some chains like Black Eyed Pea because they have really good veggies plates. And their pork chops are pretty amazing I have discovered. But I eat there once every few months type of thing.

I tend to go to more of the local places because some are boss like Crave, B&B, The Old Stone Church and Pegasus where I live now. Oh and Santiago's for 5 dollar questionable content but amazing Mexican food and green chili.

I kinda don't get the common reaction to fibromyalgia and lyme disease

it's like, oh we don't know what's causing this, let's pretend it doesn't exist?

that seems to be a common reaction, at least

like it's somehow not a legit thing to suffer from

I guess it just reminds me of how people who've never been exposed to mental illness think about depression

so you feel bad? why your life is great!

or, so you feel like you don't want to get out of bed? so what, I feel that way sometimes, suck it up!

people resent malingering so much that they look for it everywhere

with depression it is what it is - an emotional problem in which people are sad or unmotivated or whatever. some people might dismiss it as not so serious or that depressives just need to suck it up or whatever, but i don't know that it's common for people to actually disbelieve it.

the response to fibromyalgia seems to be "this person is just faking in order to get out of things she doesn't want to do." some people do this!

my sister-in-law has lupus. she uses it as an excuse to get out of pretty much anything she doesn't want to do, but somehow never has any symptoms when it comes to doing stuff she wants to do.

it's not really my problem - i live across the country and basically never see her - but i still think it's kind of shitty when i visit.

People like this really, really fuck it up for the ones who are suffering.

Then again: you should look at it like a mana bar. FM fucks up your mana bar really badly and obscures the total from you. So you never know how much you have, and it makes you horde that shit and save it for doing things you like or are important to you. There's just no knowing when it'll run out sometimes.

My fiance has a friend with FM who had to give up literally all the things she loved doing, and I always get a little bit incensed when people treat it like it's a disability of convenience as a consequence. Because you're right, the folks who are all "Thanks for coming over and playing water polo with us! Sorry I can't watch your dogs next week while you're out of town, my fibromyalgia is acting up!" make things really shitty for those who must change their lives as a consequence of the syndrome.

Depression pretty much makes dealing with every aspect of your life shittier. So, a person with literally no other physical health problems who has clinical depression can totally suck at everyday shit like holding a job and getting up in the morning and basic personal hygiene.

But a person who has serious depression and other health problems, like obesity, physical disabilities, chronic pain disorders, diabetes, etc. is going to be depressed and they're going to struggle harder with dealing with those problems than people who have those problems and don't have clinical depression.

The end result of that is when there's co-morbidity between depression and other health problems, the individual will not only measurably deal with their situation poorer on average, they're actually going to see their struggle as intrinsically harder than it actually is. They will see themselves as more obese than they are, find their chronic back pain more debilitating than it might actually be, find their diabetes far harder to manage than it really is, etc.

Depression lowers your tolerances and thresholds for the things that make you suffer, and makes all the suffering you feel blur together into this horrid morass that you find way worse than it really is. So, when it's present in a person who is dealing with anything else, depression (and it's jittery cousin, anxiety) needs to be seriously and aggressively treated and managed or the rest of that shit is going to be for naught.

    Pretty interesting.

i have a doctor friend who is basically of this opinion - that pain sensitivity is highly variable in people and pain sensitivity + depression = fibromyalgia.

of course, no one knows for sure, but it seems like a reasonable possibility.

she was also of the opinion that treating it like a non-psychological/ neurological disorder probably makes it worse for people. there are surprisingly large subcultures of people who need it to be a physical disease with a physical in order to feel validated and end up really devoting their lives to the "cause".

whereas, if it really is neurological/ psychological, at least it gives the people who suffer from it a target to work against. like, if you feel shitty because you have the flu, a few days in bed away from people will help you get better. if you feel shitty because depression, a few days in bed away from people will generally make you feel worse.

    This is infuriatingly true.

The decade that produced no u turn records, metalheadz, suburban base, schematic, drop bass network, etc etc etc

    Augh

    weirdo niche electronica is niche

top grossing album of the 90s was electronica
after taking into account licensing and royalties

and after taking into account money grossed from those licenses and royalties after the 90s ended

    Moby's Play

that was a pretty good album. i guess "electronica" is a pretty broad category.

i listened to some, like, shaman and front 242 in the 90s. it was not particularly good stuff.

At Ether Textiles the tap water was filthy and rare bathroom breaks meant a quick trip to dirty, overflowing toilets. Elevators were blocked off for managers and international visitors, forcing workers to use a single, unsafe stairwell, say Pakhi, her husband, and a co-worker, Rayhan Kabir. On April 23, Rana Plaza developed cracks, according to video footage and interviews with survivors. The next day, Fakir begged his wife not to go to work. She agreed, and after he left for work at another factory, Pakhi called in and asked for the day off. Her manager told her a month’s salary would be withheld if she didn’t show up, she says. Pakhi got to work on time.

Almost 400 people worked on her floor, all for Ether Textiles, whose website has been pulled down. (Its owner has been arrested but not yet charged. The names of its customers have not yet become public.) When Pakhi again begged for the day off, she says, her boss let fly with a string of unprintable insults. Hours later, Pakhi was trapped in the rubble, begging for her life and listening to screams all around her. She says that after rescuers failed to free her legs by removing debris with their bare hands, they left and returned with a large, broad knife. They started chopping. She says she doesn’t remember what happened next. She woke up in a hospital, her husband’s cell phone number scrawled on the wall, her legs gone.

How does blood type work, genetically? Like, you're made inside your mother so I don't see how a father's blood type could influence what blood type the child ends up having at all.

All this stuff about "there's power in blood!" blah blah your father was important blah blah. You don't really have any of your father's blood. You have his DNA and genetics otherwise, but blood?
