The authorities in Germany said Monday that they had arrested a man, identifying him only by the initial “M,” who had acted as the accountant for a band of Somali pirates who hijacked a German oil tanker three years ago.

The man, who “partially confessed,” according to a police statement, is believed to have been responsible for “the bookkeeping, which was the basis for the proportional division of the ransom between the participating pirates.” He faces a potential prison sentence of 5 to 15 years on charges of kidnapping and grievous bodily harm.

I was shopping around NewEgg for modems when someone (maybe you?) mentioned that option earlier.

Guess I could go to Best Buy and get one just to see if it works. Though it'd still have to be registered to my account, right?

You might have to call up Comcast and tell them the modem's MAC address and maybe slap them around if they think they know things.

Yep, confirmed just now that Comcast is blocking me with a pay wall on their tech support for a service that I pay ~$90 a month for. What I want to do is apparently technically called putting the modem in bridge mode, and no one in their regular tech support can do it -- just people in "Signature Plus" tech support.

Signature Plus just happens to cost $39.99 upfront, and ~$15/mo. :?

    Fuck this ISP oligopoly Earth.

What are you trying to do? I've used a laptop as a network bridge before, it might not be bad

Need to forward a very specific port on my modem to get remote access working in AirVideo. AirVideo's tech support says forwarding the port on the modem is the only way to get it to work.

Comcast says no fuck you pay me.

And for $65 (one month of their shitty plus gold service) you can buy a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem of your own and do whatever the fuck you want.

Just do this. Fuck Comcast in the ear.

Me: "So if I buy my own modem -- like, just go to Best Buy and buy my own cable modem -- will I not have to deal with this bridge mode problem?"
Comcast Tech Support: "Well actually you'd still have to have bridge mode configured by one of our Help Desk technicians."
Me: "And I can only do that if I have the Signature Plus tech support?"
    Comcast: "Yes, that's correct."
    *5 seconds of silence*

That's fucking bullshit. They are LYING to you.

Although actually, I finally figured out how to get to my physical modem's "Advanced" settings tab. Under the "Router" setting, it says "Disabled," so I'm tempted to think my modem might not even be the problem -- Comcast might just be cockblocking me on their end.

This is not hard to check at all. Open your router's configuration and look at what it calls its "WAN" or "Internet" IP. Does it start with 10 or 192?

Yes, 192.168.15.2 is a phony local address, so when your router forwards a port, it's forwarding it directly into your modem's fantasy land rather than the actual internet.

    i didn't know!

    what happen?

I got injured Dec. 28th, got ASMO'd to the RCU Jan 7th, was there until March 18th doing physical therapy, and I ran a PFA but failed it because I was in a lot of pain, got sent home April 5th.

At one point I was like "LET'S DO THIS" and really getting into it, but when I got to the RCU, I saw they had an art school pamphlet and when I read it I had a panic attack in the bathroom going "OH GOD, WHAT HAVE I DONE, I SHOULD BE DOING THIS" but I was like "No, do this, then you can go and DO that" but my injury never got better so now I'm just trying to find a job and still do comics.

Also: yes, Facebook is really good for organizing shit. The thread paradigm means I just make a new post for, "Hey jerks let's go watch a movie," and Jerks will reply to only that comment and be like, "Yeah coo'."

The awkward part is that Facebook does the "x saw this" thing for comments, so you know exactly who saw your post but didn't give a shit/doesn't like you/is secretly laughing at you with everyone else.
