For what it's worth I didn't identify with the word queer until recently.
I mean I still don't really identify with it in the sense that it isn't one of the first things I'd mention when describing myself, but I mean, yeah I am totally queer actually.
In my case it's double nice because it doesn't force me to think about my own gender and who I'm attracted to and try to shoehorn in one of the words we have for orientation that doesn't always describe my situation.

Which was funny because she used that word so much you'd have expected someone to have said something earlier.

Queer is pretty much just a blanket term for someone who's got any particularly atypical gender stuff going on.
Including being attracted to the same sex, and being any kind of trans, and often stuff like crossdressing is considered queer but it really depends. As a blanket term it's got fuzzy edges.
