It annoys me. I don't always want something, but sometimes I do, and I don't have it!

Pay for a fucking huge Dropbox plan, or a web server with hundreds of gigs of storage.

The latter is tons of fun because depending on how much access you have to the plumbing of the server you can host custom services for yourself along with your files.

my racist uncle bought a 70" smart tv and he's been buying a bunch of blu-rays. he got really into ripping them and i thought he was gonna make a lil media box with hundreds of 1080p movies at his fingertips.

instead he just wanted to burn copies to protect himself against the disc giving out?

seems like he's already done a lot of the legwork, spending a couple hundred bucks on a few terabytes of storage to make it disc free would be an attractive proposition to me

Subscription services aren't practical right now.

I'd rather just save for a synology and do one big purchase.

Honestly I could fiddle with my Linux box and get mostly the same functionality but I'm fucking lazy.

I know you weren't here yesterday, but we already did this dance.

And a hybrid drive is not the same thing as a fusion drive, and if you are actually interested in the differences you can read up on them, but I won't contribute to the back and forth on this topic any more, because it leads to dark and frankly antagonistic roads.

What you think "makes sense" has nothing to do with reality. It just has to do with your life experience. And your life experience may only be a small smidgen of reality. Possibly even a distorted account of reality at that. So what this means is that, beginning in the 20th century as our means of decoding nature became more and more powerful, we started realizing our common sense is no longer a tool to pass judgment on whether or not a scientific theory is correct. - Neil Degrasse Tyson

my uncle (who bought a tiny house a couple years ago in a broken down old coal town in central PA for like $14k) is looking to get a 'real' house where he could spread out and maybe do his own thing, stop living with other family... something closer to philly, i mean, near work. there's no work to be found up where his backup house is right now.

so anyway he was like "no way i'm paying a hundred thousand dollars though, that's insane, you'll be paying on that forever"

he basically wants to find something he can pay off to 0 in <5 years

i told him that is sort of unrealistic with his means and what he's looking for

    but he disagrees i guess

    good luck to him :v

I am pretty determined not to pay more than $400,000 for a 2000-3000 sq ft house. But might have to go over when I eventually buy one.

Man, screw even having that 1TB drive. Uninstall the games you're not playing. SSD-only, no big file collections.

Or make your home PC your filedump and use AirVideo (once I get the damn Remote Access feature working, stupid Comcast) to access your video media. 2x 1TB drives, 1x 3TB HDD, 1x 3TB USB3.0 external HDD. With uTorrent remote, I can also remotely torrent.

    It's a beautiful thing.
