Dubai is actually pretty fucking terrible on a lot of fronts.
But on the other hand, a friend of mine told me an anecdote about a wealthy Arab he meant once -- an anecdote which he himself said he might've been misremembering and quoting from a movie.
Basically, when asked why they were building all this new shit out in the middle of the desert, the Arab dude says:
"Well, when the oil runs out, they can take our expensive cars and planes and yachts... but they can't take the buildings."
Which I find pretty intensely saddening.
