It's a series of books about a group of teens that witness the crash of an alien ship where the dying pilot tells them that their world is being secretly invaded by brain slugs known as Yeerks. He gifts them a device which allows them to transform into any creature they touch, but staying in that form for longer than 2 hours will result in it being permanent. They use this power to fight back against the invasion.

interesting, that seems like something I would have read. I don't imagine random teens being able to find any cool animals though, so a lot of housecats in the war.

Actually, they get their main battle animals from the zoo.

Also they have telepathy when in animal form, if you're wondering how they communicate.

No red pandas that I can recall, they could have stopped the invasion right then and there with cuteness.

As to why it was so useful? The animal kingdom offers a pretty damn good set of abilities. Combat, espionage, travel, and so on.

One thing that stuck with me since I was a kid was the time that Jake(?) morphed into a fly to spy on a Yeerk meeting or something. He's going to leave and gets swatted and it's like a page of describing how he feels as he's slowly dying.

I mean, he manages to morph back in time somehow, but damn that was dark and really got to me as a kid.

there was tons of that shit. pretty much any time they were fighting hork-bajir the next 3 pages would be torn off limbs and shit. i remember marco trying to free tobias from torture was basically bleeding to death as he broke the cage open. christ alive.

seeing as the animorphs were guerrilla fighters, morphing into animals is an insane advantage. even if elfangor had given them each a laser pistol, they couldn't have done as much damage as they could just spying on them as fleas.

i loved the development through the books as they became increasingly more competent at sabotage and stuff, having detailed knowledge of who's a yeerk and who's likely to be, where the entrances to the pool were, etc. the stuff in between the books when they're not on crazy adventures always seemed the coolest to me since it would have just been them tailing suspected yeerks or following up leads and adding another name to the list.

Except for the one where they all turned into ants and almost lost their minds because the militaristic mindlessness of the ant was almost too much to bear!

Best part of the David arc was rachael in the shower, unnerved by a broadcast message and how David could have been anywhere. So was the part when david explained how he dehumanized them in his mind.

Marco summing up the end with the chee computer. paraphrasing
i looked back at the broken window, and i realized I did not want to look in there.

I just realized that they forced upon eric what had been forced upon them.

the only animorphs book that sucked and was without merit was the later one with rachel and david mentioned earlier

I dunno if you can say it was "Without merit."

It taught me at a very young age that there are indeed fates worse than death, I cannot think of any other contemporary literature I read around that time which drove that point home.

Unless there was a second book involving rachel and david. I think the one where they 'punish' david was among the last I ever read.

    book 48.

Given how popular Ben-10 is (I think? They have 3 different versions of it over about six years, right?) Nickelodeon really missed the gat damn boat by not making a fucking cartoon of that.

Live action? The hell were you thinking! Seriously! The hell!

They were thinking about cashing on that Power Ranger money.

The forgotten realms books are the best kind of bad, trashy fantasy novel. I loved the hell out of all 5 of those god books.

The Drizzt books are by and large just bad though. R.A. Salvatore is bad at writing fighting scenes, and thinks he isn't, so throws them everywhere.

He's alright at worldbuilding though, or used to be anyway. I know people hate on drow, and for good reason, but that first book in the Drizzt origin trilogy is some solid setting establishment and development. In addition to being a bad, trashy, fun fantasy novel. The other two aren't great though.

I think I started reading Salvatore's stuff after I'd played Baldur's Gate, so it was sort of cool to read stories from the same world. Plus I was into Dragonlance, so more "D&D party of goddamn superheroes has adventures" was always welcome. The Drizzt stuff got pretty old though; the most interesting stuff was with Entreri or Jarlaxle, but they turned into Mary Sues (Evil Sue? Angry Sue?) pretty quick too.

Ax could do that multiple morph thing because he was trained and because they were all the same species I'm pretty sure.

blah blah blah....grape juice. Gotta respect the balls on Aximilli Esgarooth Isthill for negotiating with the enemy general that ate his brother and still lied.

edit: Back to the movie, do you think that they will keep those two things Ender did?
1st kill at age 6, second at age 12? Will they show the kills? Will he be naked for the fight?

You know, for an allegedly homophobic writer, Ender's Game had some really homoerotic scenes.

Probably because if Barker ever caught one of them he'd spay and/or neuter them.
