I'm giving up trying to explain to my mom that the new iPhones having a different connector isn't some corporate conspiracy they made out of spite.

    Well

    It is Apple

Moreover, they pretty much just screwed up with it anyway, since the new connectors can't actually manage HDMI output.

Ooh, is it that new connector that has a little microprocessor in it that decompresses video data sent over the device link into something that is almost but not quite HD video?

I remember reading about that. It seemed less than optimal. Of course, a lot of mobile devices do the same thing, they just explicitly have a separate box to do it (like the HTC media link) instead of cramming it all into the connector and then shiftily claiming that it outputs HDMI.

My understanding of MHL was that it actually does output HDMI just in a multiplexed way over the pins - hence you couldn't use it with USB-OTG at the same time on most devices (because there weren't any physical pins left to repurpose simultaneously).

The HTC might do it differently though.

I coughed up £80 quid readily to get data last month (which turned out to not pan out, so it got refunded). Why am I so hesitant to cough up £30 to get data today?

    Because it's not that it's £30, it's that it's another £30.

Still chuckling about yesterday's Giro d'Italia stage. It was a team time trial, so each nine-man squad is released onto the course separately and the idea is that they work together to cover the distance in the fastest time possible. The first five of the squad to cross the line are awarded the time of the fifth rider, with the remaining four awarded their own actual time.

Team Sky were going for the stage victory, and their time trial guy who would be doing most of the work is Dario Cataldo, who is the Italian National Time Trial champion. When several riders finish on the same time, the order in which they finish is used to decide the general classification placings. Out of a general sense of recognition and appreciation, the idea was that if Sky took the leader's jersey, they would set up their finish such that it would be awarded to Cataldo - for a variety of reasons: there's a win bonus, prizes for taking and holding the jersey, sponsor rewards for the individual rider (especially time triallists), etc.

However, things didn't work out as they wanted - they dropped one rider way too early because he pushed too hard, too soon, and they lost another rider that was meant to stick with the fastest five until the finish to a mechanical failure. The rider that hung on to give them a complete five to set the team's time was another Italian, Salvatore Puccio, who is riding his first season at the highest tier of racing and has been brought along on his first Grand Tour as a mountain domestique. He is basically the team new guy who gets to do the scut work of pace setting and covering off unimportant breakaways. But, because he finished higher than Cataldo on stage 1, he was awarded the pink jersey over Sky's very expensive, experienced, and famous time trial specialist, despite Cataldo having done the work that made that possible.

    Got to be awkward.

The few episodes of Marble Hornets I've watched nearly had my fall out of my office chair two or three times. For reference: That is something no film has managed in over a decade.
So, I'm really not sure I'd show something like that to my kid.

Also the injustice app game is bullshit the last battle requires you to either pay money to upgrade your characters to win or grind hundreds of hours instead.

As good or at least interesting as Bioshock Infinite ending was. I think the game had some pretty bad pacing issues and the combat was average at best.

    Ugh. I should get up.

Last night was a late one. Had dinner/board games with friends (we played Maori), then stayed and drank till 2AM. Went to a slightly dark place. However I did meet some new fun people.

Clapham was rammed though, even at 2AM on a Sunday night/Monday morning
