    It's because the Dutch basically traded it to the English for Suriname during one of the Anglo-Dutch Wars. It felt weird having a major colony named after your national enemy's capital city (imagine a New Moscow or New Ottawa, US?), so they changed it to one of their cities.

    There is a Cairo in the US. We actually do have cities named after foreign capitals.

    I think we have a Moscow as well.

    Google says it is in Idaho.

    Yes, I know, I grew up near Cairo, New York and there's also Berlin, Paris, and Rome in the same state. And Florida, New York. Fuck Florida.

    Edit: The Cairo, US you're probably thinking of is in Illinois. I don't know if they call the area Little Egypt anymore, but I know they used to back in Lincoln days, because Memphis and another (Alexandria?) are in the same area.

    back home there's some facility or other with a lot of lights on the other side of the fjord

    hidden behind the Horn on rennesøy and the other hilly islands but when the clouds are right that place makes a really strong orange light come from the sky over it
