Who here has experience with Gantt charts

I have experience with them not meaning anything.

I had to wiki them and went "Oh, those."

I'm sure they're fine in principle but in my experience they are composed of equal parts wishful thinking and outright fabrication.

my advisor was like "I want you to make me one for your thesis"

    and I was like "uh"

You'll be fine right up until you hit the part where how long something is going to take is either completely unknown or heavily dependent on the result of an as yet uncompleted preceding task. At that point traditionally one starts making shit up.

Sounds just like grad school actually

Is your thesis about process improvement at a Toyota plant?

    yes

no but for real my boss wants some sort of timeline for my experiments and she is fond of them for some reason

    Make a chart.

But have fourteen events, all running simultaneously, and that all read, "When I'm good and ready."

Then make the "Today" bar waaaaay to the left of any of the bars.

For reasons, I have never read Crime and Punishment.

Randomly picked one of the copies we have lying around up today and have read a page or two. Starts off pretty strongly.

This is, apparently, Jessie Coulson's translation. Is his translation well-considered, or is there a translation that's preferred?

Chanus When you're walking around Carytown, do you ever think to yourself, "this must be what Portland is like?"

That's how I felt when I realized there was an American Apparel retailer the last time I was down there.

I didn't realize American Apparel wasn't just a think kids bought over the internets.

    SammyF

Carytown is what I imagine Richmond's upper-middle class thinks Portland is like.

It seems like a very ticky-tacky version of a bohemian boutique strip.

Though, I've also been going to Carytown since high school, which is the mid-90s, and it's kind of always been like that.

There are better restaurants now, though.

Galaxy Diner is still there, though, I see.

And some taco place with really horrible service.

But the Byrd survives so it's not all bad.

The service at Nacho Mama is indeed terrible, but the food is p decent.

There's a new shawarma place near the top by Kroger that's pretty dope. Called Doner Kebab, I think.

Can Can is good if you don't mind paying way to much for fancy food (it's good, but overpriced imo).

I've been to Can Can, and you're right. It's the best food I've found there (and the best location on that block) but because it's competing with the sixteen greasy spoons across the street the owners seem to think they can get away with charging about 20% too much.

You know what's great, is Burger Bach.

In the Gantt chart case it's because Gantt charts for research projects are bullshit, because no one wants to hear an honest assessment of how shitty the resources in their lab actually are. The correct duration for anything is to find something that's still broken, and find out how long it's been that way. That's how long something is going to take.
