    kinda tl;dr

    what happened to the rmah?

People figured out how to dupe gold like crazy, bought everything off the gold auction house and proceeded to put it up for sale on the RMAH, completely wrecking the in-game economy.
All because of an untested patch note.

I am comforted by Richard Dawkins’ theory of memes. Those are mental units: thoughts, ideas, gestures, notions, songs, beliefs, rhymes, ideals, teachings, sayings, phrases, clichés that move from mind to mind as genes move from body to body. After a lifetime of writing, teaching, broadcasting and telling too many jokes, I will leave behind more memes than many. They will all also eventually die, but so it goes. - Roger Ebert, I Do Not Fear Death

    kinda tl;dr

    what happened to the rmah?

Blizzard just recently released a patch with a stupid buffer overflow that let people easily duplicate gold. And I mean billions of gold. Hundreds of billions. Which then was used to buy everything for sale on the gold AH (and making gold essentially worthless once people realized what was happening and started pulling down their auctions) and put it into the real money AH totally flooding it.

Blizzard really fucked themselves with it, and not having PvP with the RMAH kinda was shooting themselves in the foot. They, obviously, lacked vision for the economics, and didn't plan it with some of the newer f2p models as guides. They really coulda had a valuable asset there, even moreso than Starcraft.

I don't think there is any possible way to have a game with a RMAH that is as good for the customer as one without. It is an inherently toxic addition to any game.

A RMAH that uses premium currency instead of cash could work quite well actually.

But straight on dollars, while I wouldn't say "inherently toxic", I can't see working with the current game models.

What you think "makes sense" has nothing to do with reality. It just has to do with your life experience. And your life experience may only be a small smidgen of reality. Possibly even a distorted account of reality at that. Clearly casinos are the worst gaming products on the market.. o_O I think having games that're beatable and encourage deep and serious study/play and can support it is desirable. You could have a RMAH that way, it'd just take some serious vision to last. It'd sell, though, especially with PvP. if there's one thing the Korean market share (which will be close to the US's in a generation) is that the more like real sport they become, the more revenuesources they can hope to capture.

    I'm in-between.
Getting shit done is what actually matters. Working hard to get that thing done has to provide some benefit in exchange for working hard or you're just being inefficient.

But in reality in order to maximize what shit you get done you have to work hard. Because even if you tend to be the smartest guy in the room, there's a lot of fucking rooms in the world.
