I know people who would likely print specialist guns if ever possible because in NZ buying anything fancy, like an AR-15 would be near impossible.

Sure it would likely be illegal possession a the very least but if they had little chance of being caught, it would be done.

so ignoring the value of my own time how much would it save to build a mid range PC vs just buying one premade?

    Here's a comparison. The entry-level Alienware Auroroa is $1399.

    It has:

    Intel i7-3820 ($300 from Newegg)
Win7 Home Premium ($100 from Newegg)
8 Gigs DDR3 Ram (Around $60 from Newegg)
1tb HDD (Around $70 from Newegg)
Nvidia GTX 660 1.5gb card (Around $200 from Newegg for the 2gb card)

So that's around $700. Add in a ~600 watt PSU (Around $90 for a well-reviewed model on Newegg, leaves you plenty of room to add more components later without having to upgrade the PSU) and a case (around $100 for a decent one on Newegg) and You're at about $900, give or take. A $500 savings.

Of course you can do whacky shit. There are two options here, depending on who you're working for, what you're shipping, etc.

Option 1 is to burn down the truck. Collect insurance. Be rich. Buy new truck.

Option 2 is to get the fuck out, change your name, use one of your forged passports to move to Canada (you do have forged passports, right?).

Don't use Alienware as the comparison point?

Going to crosspost the one I made for skippy from the tech forum:
It's actually not that bad these days.

I made this system, which is a pretty solid gaming rig, for $1013.

Edit: This one has the same parts for $980, just started with a different bundle.

Then I put in the same stuff on this thing and only came out $70 less. And that's using a Microcenter CPU deal. Not a bad premium at all for a 3-year warranty, honestly.

Using the same parts where possible, the premium at iBuyPower is like $40-$80.

because one of the other m113 drivers was off somewhere doing a thing I even got to join in on a "column under attack" little training exercise with the one gun battery

which was super fun too. My gun was out of my reach the whole time since an assault rifle is a useless thing for the driver but driving the m113 was way way way more fun than guns anyway

parents live near a pond. It's across the street. Some people were killing ducks in this pond with long yard implements (a rake?). The police were called, no one was caught. The parents bought a "no trespassing" sign and a fancy looking fake camera and apparently no one has been around for a couple of weeks afterwards. They had issues with rednecks bringing their trucks around so they could fish in the pond in their neighbor's yard.

    A couple hundred bucks.

That said, if you do not have a monitor/keyboard/mouse already, lots of the bundled machines sell them cheaper.

Also, if you do not have a legal copy of windows (and want to be legal) that eats 100-130 dollars of your savings.

On the flip side, you may end up spending a few hours on a store-bought machine uninstalling adware, malware and shitty antivirus apps.

The biggest boon is you can spend money on an actual performing video card. Most of the ones in store boughts for $600 are shit. Like, 3 generations ago shit.

So, buy your $400 PC, and drop $200 on a video card, boom, now you can play games on high instead of low.

    That ... doesn't sound right.

Most of the PCs below $600 have onboard video, most of the PCs above $600 but less than $1200 have shitty 3-4 generation ago video cards (or super low end 2 generations ago ones). $1200+ you're paying premiums on the good quality hardware.

Plus yeah, bad PSUs all up ins.

You can probably also get those prices down, and an i7 is pointless. You could get the Xeon version of the i7 since you're going dedicated graphics. Save yourself another $100 or so there.
