    Gearbox bought Homeworld.

    Those monsters.

I am a bit pissed about that. Because Gearbox does have hell of talented people there but they have a history of stealing resources from then shitting all over any game they do that is not Borderlands in order to fund the development of the next Borderlands.

They haven't shat on all of them. Opposing Forces was pretty legit. I am a bit concerned about Homeworld though, because it's one of the few 'space' games that I really dug.

tbh Borderlands 3 is probably going to be part financed off the $Texas they are going to make bringing homeworld 1&2 to GoG followed by "HD" versions of the same for PC and tablets.
Which seems pretty fine to me.

Damn I never even considered an HD version of Homeworld. That'd be awesome. Then again, it depends on how they HD'ed it. Like more shit? No thanks. Crisper graphics? Let's do it! I think a big part of the appeal of HW for me was how empty it all seemed, like how I imagined space would really be.

have they actually said if or when they are bringing Homeworld 1&2 to GoG? Cause I would buy those so hard. Maybe even buy em from Steam if they go that way. Would just stick with my discs if they went with some other service (especially Origin) though.

Homeworld 1 especially would benefit. It only has 16 bit textures (as opposed to 32) because when they were making it those jackwads at Voodoo were still ruling the 3d card world.

voodoo cards were so terrible. There was good reason they folded so thoroughly and completely as soon as a competent competitor showed up (the first gen NVidia TNT)

"oh no one will ever need more than 16 bit color depth in textures" is right up there with "no one will ever need more than 640kb of RAM"

This is mostly an educated guess, because the first thing they said they'd do with the homeworld franchise was "to preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games, Homeworld and Homeworld 2, with the intent of making them accessible on today's leading digital platforms."

So, i'd imagine the original stuff being given to the guys at GoG to work their magic on, then doing a brief HD tarting up (sharper graphics, touch based controls etc) for tablets and such.
Something similar to what happened to the original Carmageddon.

shit my 300A ran at 600mhz with a home-built water cooling system made from a car's transmission cooler and a fish tank pump

I had 120 mm fans that were so big there was no room for them to be on the inside of the case so i just bolted them to the outside

starting my pc sounded like a jet engine starting up

tomb raider 2 might as well have been doom to my monster of a rig

To be fair, a lot of monitors aren't actually 24 bit and no one notices.

It wasn't just the look of it, but having to deal with 16 bit registers and splitting up the bytes per pixel as a 5,5,6 (5,5,5 with 1 bit alpha or empty etc...) or some such was such a pain. It sometimes required more work to push the pixels around because reading from / writing to 5/8th of a byte (as opposed to one byte) is such an annoyance.

edit: for example, with an 8 bit palette or with 32 bit color (no one actually does 24, it's actually more efficient to do 32 bit and just waste 8 bits than do 24) depending on the video mode either each pixel lines up to a single memory address or at least each color channel in a chained video mode.

But with 16 bit a pixel or color channel might start in the 5th bit of address A and finish in the first few bits of A+1.
